My cat is scared of fireworks
The 4th of July and days before and after can be a cause for celebration. Fireworks are beautiful, but can be very scary for our pets. The sound is jolting and can scare our cats.
Here are some tips to keep your cat safe and as calm during the fireworks so they aren’t as scared.
KEEP YOUR CAT INDOORS DURING FIREWORKS
Cat’s are very curious and can sometimes sneak out or run when they hear scary sounds. Keep them inside and escape-proof your house. This means closing doors, windows and any nooks or crannies they can sneak into.
CREATE A SAFE SPACE
If your cat gravitates toward a certain spot when company arrive or when they are scared, place a lined box with blankets where they can burrow. Some cats prefer high spots, some prefer to be under a bed. You know your cat best. Also, cover any windows in the house so they don’t scared by flashes of light.
SOOTHING MUSIC OR NOISE
If your cat is used to the radio, turn it on. Otherwise, find calming music like classical music on low volume. Use a pheromone plug-in diffuser such as Feliway or ComfortZone for your house. These can reduce anxiety and create a calming effect. We recommend using it a few days before the festivities begin. in a space where your cat frequents.
HUMAN INTERACTION
Cats pick up on your behavior, so act like you normally would. This will decrease their anxiety. Don’t pick them up; they want control of where they are and where they can go. If someone else is caring for them, instruct them to do the same.
IDENTIFICATION
Make sure your cat’s microchip and details are updated. Easy-release collars with an updated contact number and name is also recommended.
